Message from the President

April 2012

The trail has been hopping with activity during this wonderfully mild spring - and not just with cyclists and hikers. Has anyone else noticed an abundance of bunnies? Well, better on the trail than in our gardens.

Anyhow, please plan on attending our next meeting, May 9th in Belleville at Library Park at 6:30. We'll have much to discuss including:
  • Monroe Trailhead Project: Much is happening in Monroe as the trailhead on the south end gets closer to reality.
  • Bikeorama results - with many thanks to our volunteers who participated in the March event
  • Maintenance Day near Stewart Tunnel - MAY 19: MARK YOUR CALENDAR
  • Status of prairie restoration and historic marker proposals
  • BIKE THE BLAST! Read about the new ride here.
Please contact me to add items to our agenda. I look forward to seeing you in the Merry month of May!

Ride on!

What's New on the Trail?

On Saturday, May 19, Friends of Badger State Trail volunteers conducted a 'Spruce up for Spring' day in the area around the kiosk they donated in 2010. Activities included mowing grass, pulling and cutting exotic species, raking the trail, and clearing the area. Many riders stopped by to thank the volunteers for their efforts. Join us next year!

Sarah, from Monroe, was recently spotted at the Stewart Tunnel. She and 130 riders were involved in a Habitat for Humanity program charity ride. She was riding from Monroe to the tunnel and back.

Cathy and her daughter Jennifer, from the Raven Oaks neighborhood, take Jennifer's new bike for a spin on the Badger Trail. Her Dad had just assembled the bike the night before and they were out for a test ride.

Jennifer and her son Trevor, from Belleville, enjoy a beautiful Thursday afternoon on the trail.

George and Rick were recently spotted on the Badger Trail riding their 'folders' as they prepared for a biking trip to Spain.

Prairie Restoration Projects along the Trail

Two new Prairie Restoration projects have started along the trail and volunteers are needed to help!

January 31, 50 degrees, sunny sky, light wind, little ice . . .
lets ride!

Spencer Black, who represented the 77th Assembly District in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1985 until 2011, served for many years as Chair of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee and is a champion for the environment gets out and stretches his legs on the Badger Trail.

Carrying his "ice chisel", Peter Bock, who also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1987 until 2003, was riding the trail and chipping off dangerous ice that still existed in shady spots along the trail. It was such a nice day he was playing hooky from voluntering on his wife Kathleen Falks gubernatorial campaign!

Not on the Badger Trail but right next door at Badger Prairie Park - the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships, January 4-8

The 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships, opened Wednesday as more than 1,000 of the nation's top cyclo-cross racers began descending on Badger Prairie Park in Verona.
